It would seem that the cap is $370 a week for anyone who makes over 38,376.04
For those who complain the the government is trying to help the rich and hurt the poor. Personally, I take this more as the government is trying to punish anyone who has fallen from a high pay.
Capped unemployment income is $19,240 / year.
The UI program benefits the individual and the local community. Payments made directly to the individual ensure that at least some of life’s necessities such as food, shelter and clothing can be met while looking for work. For the most part UI benefits are spent in the local community, which helps sustain the economic well being of local businesses.
My rent, without food or clothing exceeds my capped unemployment income.
Note however: The award shown is you maximum UI award benefit for this claim. The maximum award is 26 times the weekly benefit amount.
So you can get up to 1/2 year. Or… 9620.
For everyone that made cracks about my salary and what I can and can’t afford. Have a nice day.
Fortunately, I have severance. Secondarily… I will have a job in 44 days.
Wow. I had no idea California UI was that pathetic. That’s about the weekly cap in PA (the number $400 is sticking in my mind), and cost of living is a lot lower here.
The other thing the UI folks don’t take into account is that you can’t really expect people to move for a short-term disruption. So if you started with high rent, you’re not going to move to lower rent for just six months. And they’re not offering to cover you longer than that.
Actually it’s improved then
When I was getting UI last year it was more like $230/week. That’s quite a big raise really.
Still almost no one’s rent is that low. Even with the raised amount.
The idea is that they want you to get a job right away. Although they do have some retraining programs, they’re not big on that. They don’t want you to start your own business either. Just get a job, any job, and be a good worker bee they say.
Ugh…
Don’t get me started on state income assistance crap. Being that I work my butt off and still barely make ends meat to make sure both my kids stay in daycare and that I have enough to live the governement thinks that I should only get something like $400 a month if I want assistance.. and even then they’d TAKE my child support (which is higher) and only give me the $400 a month. How insane is that.
No I don’t know California just yet… but honestly… *sighs* I’m nervous!
6 Months
I am pretty sure that you can also extend it for another 6 months as well if necessary, though nobody wants to be in that situation.
Yeah that breaks out to $1480/month. I ended up moving this year right as we did some layoffs and my heart jumped through my mouth. I haven’t been through the layoff thing myself so this scared the hell out of me and when I moved I specifically chose a place I could afford to pay rent on with Unemployment.
By the by, I have a futon in the living room if you still need crash space in the Bay Area for that trip, though it is in Sunnyvale.
