We have a stunning canyon view of L.A. out the back of our house. This morning I looked out the window and the view was gone. It’s one of those rare mornings where the fog is so thick that there is no view.
The city is gone. Cool view.

When I first arrived at Caltech, it was hazy for about a month. One morning I was standing at the pool at ‘Tech, and was quite supprised there were mountains there. (The foothills are only a few miles away and the closest peeks are about five thousand feet. They’re quite close and quite tall.)
“Where did the mountains come from?”
Somone told me the story that in fact the mountains materialized from the smog in the air. On a clear day the smog condenses into the mountain range that is just north of Pasadena. But when the mountain range dematerializes, the dust blows into the air, forming the brown haze that is the smog layer.
