So, money is still tight and the job search continues (slowly. Much like molasses dripping from a spoon)

Obviously, I’ve stopped playing games that cost money. Poker I only play for free now. And well, stock market… that’s always been a play game for me.

So… last week I returned to HSX. Hollywood Stock Exchange. An interesting wrinkle on the analysis of Hollywood films. The basic rules are quite simple. No one can have more than 50K shares of a film. (Either owning or owing). The value of a share depends on how much demand there is for the shares. Over opening weekend there is an adjustment. (Much like a quarterly report)

The adjustment goes: Share value = H$2.8 for every $1(M) the film makes during opening weekend. If a film makes, oh…$10 Million for the weekend. (which a certain film that you must see did), the stock is adjusted to H$28(ish) / share. Those that ran up the price to $45 (Expecting a $16(M) opening are thus disappointed and lose money in their portfolios.)

It’s interesting if these things amuse you. And if they do, here’s where I put in my referrer link. Check it out for a week or two. Kinda nifty. Yeah, sure, I get little bonuses if you use my referrer link, but in truth… I think it’s … well for lack of a better word… “Shiny”

Give it a whirl… and if you’re on… I’d love to hear your reaction.

So far, I am up to 300 shows. Special thanks to meerkat299 who’s single contribution of over 250 programs has been hard to top. I’ve been pleased to see people come up with shows he left out.

This post will be for discussion, and possible an age old flame war.

Already, I’ve gotten people who’ve brought up the Buffy-question. Is Buffy really Science fiction. It is obviously a show based in fantasy (Monsters, ghosts, and things that go bump in the night) but… it also dealt with science fiction in the use of robots, and super soldiers… Where does it lie?

So the question becomes, do we look into the differences between Sci-Fi and Fantasy for this project or do we lump them together? It is certainly possible to collect data where people rank, if a show is sci-fi/fantasy/or both.

So, do I include all ‘genre’ that could be fantasy, sci-fi, etc… or do we try to fight the debates as we go?

Comments on this will be public 🙂

I am pleased to report

that after less than 24 hours. I have more contributions than I was expecting and at first glance probably over 200 shows. Special thanks to those that emailed separately…. Tomorrow, I will be compiling the data in so far. Please relay the poll to others, the more submissions the better.

Thanks!

Well, thanks to chite my week is now very broken.

Let’s start with this link to help get you in the mood. Be warned… it is a little slow to load, but worth every second. (Granted, if someone could give me a list of what they are doing, I’d be appreciative, I don’t recognize all the pieces.

But of course on top of that for my Veridian Room addicts (I know you’re out there ashabeth)
Thanks to chite
Grow RPG and Grow Cube

Good luck.

Edit Since the LJ poll mechanism doesn’t seem to leave a lot of room, comments on this thread are initially screened if you want to add more than the poll area can support.

So, once again, someone has come up with a top XX list of the best YY of all time. This time the variables read:
someone : Boston.com
XX = 50
YY=Sci Fi Shows.

I really don’t like top XX lists in magazines. They always seem arbitrary and forced. Best songs of the 80s are always going to have Madonna and Springsteen (URG), with far less Duran Duran that they should have and despite its magnitude, Thriller should NOT be consistently number 1.

This time I sit staring agog as I’m told that Stargate:Atlantis is higher on the list than Buffy. No really, if you feel the need to look, here’s the list.

So, today, I’m going to put together what I feel is a better list. I’m even going to tell you how I’m going to do it.

Over the next week or two I’m going to put up polls. Each poll will be designed to generate the list. We’ll start general to get the shows (using only minor details in the rankings) and then ask lots of questions about the shows to generate the rankings.

Please, refer as many people as you can , because the more the people who contribute, the more realistic the final list is. Especially if you find people who disagree with your tastes.

Behind the cut is the first question in our little journey. Have at it… Come one, come all… Now’s your turn to make a list.
