I’m not going to bother trying to explain it. It starts slow but if you get the humour it gets very funny at the end

MacTel? A good idea?

Recently, on of all places a poker forum for mac users, the question was asked if this whole Mac on Intel thing is a good idea. So I responded:

Apple is now at a point where they can afford to jump on the Intel bandwagon. And it’s not because of the chip or the speed. It’s because they are positioned to fend off two possible problems with the move. 1) a drying up of hardware sales during the conversion. 2) MIcrosoft strong-arming Intel to make decisions that are not beneficial or even harmful to Apple.

Does the change really matter? The Apple OS is clearly superior to the Microsoft OS. And one doesn’t have to be a pundit to see that. The OS will run just as well on Intel as it does on the IBM series.

The consumer on the other hand (relatively uneducated) will hear “Intel” and believe that now, Apple is playing in Microsoft’s world so there’s more reason to switch. The truth is that the applications will be little changed. Sure, any application that is trying to do cross microchip emulation will be great. This consists primarily of Virtual PC.

The most important issue will be lost. Apple has an OS that can run on any microchip. They can change that out almost as easily as they can swap out the video card. The real question becomes…. once this change occurs… what happens if Microsoft decides they can move to IBM’s PPC series?

I am G33K, PH34R me!

And on 3 hours of sleep, here I sit. I am on the stone step outside the entrance of the Moscone West conference center for WWDC 2005. The annual Macintosh brain dump. New stuff and elaborations on engineering advancements from the mothership of the giant (now colourless) fruit.

I am here now because the doors in fact open at 7am. The only event this morning will be the keynote speech by the royal god of all kool aid, Steve Jobs. This will not be until 10 am. I arrived at 6am.

Please note it is currently 51° in San Francisco, not counting the chill factor from the overnight iced stone on my posterior. Why 6am? Well, this is a geek fest. Picture the worst anthtropomorphisation of the Simpson’s comic book guy. If you have that image in your head and you will picture the 15 people that were here already when I showed up at 6am.

Looking at the collective, I have come to the conclusion that long hair is now officially “out” among the geek crowd. Oh good, I still stand out from the crowd. Yay.

6:30, now 29 people. I will be updating here and also at http://lordandrei.buzznet.com

If the photo blog site interests you, I’ll send you an invite. Not that it’s needed for this free site, but… it gets me referral pluses. 🙂

More later… *wave*

So, once again I am on my favourite and least favourite trip of the year. I am in SF for the yearly Mac geek fest that is WWDC.

I arrived by cattle-car airlines (United Express) and went straight to my hotel in the down town area.

It’s a favourite because of the brain dump. It’s a least favourite, because here in S.F. I have the worst luck catching up with anyone up here that I might know if even remotely.

So, dear readers… if there is anyone who’s been reading me, who lives in the S.F. area and would like to meet for warm beverage wduring the late evening for the first few days this week. (Hell, even tonight)

Then, comment, IM, text message… you know the drill 🙂
