This is just a reminder…

Obama fought a hell of an impressive battle to make it to become the presumptive nominee for democratic candidate for President.

But now the real battle begins… and the cost to do this isn’t over. The republicans are raising lots of money to fund McCain.

And money will be necessary to defray the costs to get Obama around the country.

I strongly suggest dropping by my fundraising site

It really doesn’t matter how little you put forth.. but each dollar does help.

And every dollar goes directly to the Obama effort. None gets siphoned off in processing.

Just my $0.02 (and then some)

So, the weekend started with me doing a presentation on programming in a new language to my team. My first presentation and about 80% of my team is in there. Lots of people. No pressure 😉

Afterwards we had a Friday celebration for a really cool guy on the team that has now been in our group for 10 years. I spent the bulk of that period discussing Doctor Who and Highlander and explained that Highlander IV was actually a really amazingly good movie.

I get to the car. There is reggae music playing. shimmeringjemmy really doesn’t like Reggae… so… weird.

I get in the car and she looks at me and says, “Sorry I don’t have room to get down on one knee… but, would you like your ex-girlfriend’s ring.” Which she then placed on my finger.

This unto itself requires explanation…. A really cool person I was involved with about 1 year and a half back and I exchanged rings. After we broke up she asked me to keep the ring she gave me. And I wear it daily. I took it in last week for a cleaning to a jeweler we use.

H picked it up today while I was at work. But, in our family sense of humour.. she couldn’t merely hand it over. So, she came up with the contrived sentence above. Which between the reggae, the class, the discussion on Highlander, and everything else… my brain went FWEEEEEEE!

Guess it’s time for a new Doctor Who… At least that’ll make sense. It’s not like unexpected relatives are gonna pop up out of nowhere for the Doctor.

Usual drill:

Aiden maaaaayyy go down from 7-8ish… So we have to be wary of that.

Tonight’s Agenda
Doctor Who (Series 4) “The Doctor’s *@&#&!” (Blanked to avoid spoiler)
Doctor Who (Season 26) “Survival” Part 2
Doctor Who (Season 15) “Invasion of Time” Parts 5 & 6 (Probably while Aiden is being put to bed)
And some Vids

We’ll probably be doing this more regularly.

Consider getting into fan mode for these things 😉 (Dress up, wear buttons…SCARF!)

If you’re not one of our regulars (and I know who that is) drop me a comment so I know who to expect.

Potluck food, snacks, drinks appreciated.

An anecdote

This morning on the way to the bus I wanted to check something on the ‘net. I reached into my pocket at pulled out a USB Sprint Networking device for my laptop.

The device sits in the palm of my hand. It’s about 2 inches long and maybe 1/2 inch for the other two dimensions.

I pulled it out and stared at it.

I thought about the first typewriter I ever touched in my father’s office. It was one of the new electric typewriters with a metal ball that would pop up and rotate to the position that the key imprint was on.

I thought about my father’s answering machine. An industrial looking, metal box a little larger than a tivo with one of those tiny, red, press buttons on it. One of those buttons that left a divot in your finger because you had to hold it in to record a message. This was the only thing visible on the box.

Then I thought about my first computer and how I would use a 300 baud modem to call a BBS to exchange text information. The only graphics back then were ascii. For the record, Standard DSL is 1.5 Mbps, about 5 times as much data. Ethernet talks about Gigabit and 10 gigabit. which is 1000 and 10000 times as much as DSL.

I reflected for a moment on how unbelievable the technology was in the palm of my hand.

As a kid, all I really could do was talk about my favourite TV show. (At the time in the late 70’s it was an old show called “Doctor Who”). Some people would write their own fiction based on the TV Shows. (I remember beta reading some stories by a woman I used to chat with named Diane Duane)

As I talked about this nostalgic memory with shimmeringjemmy she looked at me and said, “And now you can do it all again. See how far technology has come :)”

Kind of puts it all in perspective
