moving rant
Sorry to hear about the doucheosity of the movers, having been through that twice on my most recent move.
Normally, I do my own packing, but we had to move rather suddenly. The company buying our house said that we didn’t have to clean up afterwards because they were hiring professional cleaners to come in.
The first movers walked out after commenting on pet hair and a sticky table, and I had to have a maid service come in the next day in order for the moving company to agree to send someone else. Because my husband was driving up through W. Virginia with the dog at the time, we found out that the bank thought our credit cards had been stolen, so they had put a freeze on our account. So it took the whole day to get that straightened out and find new movers. I had to fly out the morning that the movers arrived, so I couldn’t supervise their packing. When they arrived, I had to unpack the truck with them because it had started raining. The two Ukranians spoke very little English and one was not supposed to lift heavy items; they were merely driving the van to meet the actual local movers who never showed up. Pretty much they got everything into the living room for me to deal with later. So I had to assemble everything myself. I had paid for them to pack, unpack, and reassemble because I knew I didn’t have enough time, and they had just thrown things into boxes haphazardly. By the time that they left and I was able to unpack my belongings, there were broken dishes, bookcases, etc. The screws to my son’s cabin bed were missing, so I had to order them from Jordan’s Furniture in MA where I’d purchased the bed. However, the store doesn’t normally send replacement parts to NY. I had to track down the makers of the bed, and the stores in which I could buy wooden support slats as well.
It was a hellacious move. I haven’t fully unpacked because there is no where to put everything. It took six months of searching through boxes again to find missing and misplaced items.
Mee First and the Gimme Gimmes are the ONLY thing I took away from 4 horrible months in Chicago!
They ROCK!
