Well, I have been ‘freelance’ again for about 4 weeks. Sadly, I have been unable to sit down and write any code. I’ve found distraction after distraction. Genealogy, Civilization, House Cleaning, OTO… But every time I sit down to code, I just go blank.

It’s not that I don’t have something I want to make… Hell I have about 400 projects, I just feel like something in my brain has disconnected, and I just can’t code. Almost like an attack of “Stupid”

Things in life are going well. Heather is awesome. Church is great. Life is fun. Just not being productive code-wise.

Will try again tonight.

*sigh*

Friday Five

1. Do you remember your first best friend? Who was it?
His name was Patrick. We went to private elementary school together. We briefly saw each other in a reunion I organized when I was about 19. We emailed very briefly about 4 years ago.

2. Are you still in touch with this person?
No. Our last email contact only lasted 2 messages. One each way. It seems that near the end of his life, my father was tapping everyone ever associated with himself or me for money. I fear that drove many of my old friends away. That and my lack of social graces until the age of about (looks at watch) last year.

3. Do you have a current close friend?
Happily many. Singling out shimmeringjemmy would be too obvious, but I’d be lax if I didn’t include w3woody and his wife… and for that matter just about everyone else in the L.A. area of my order.

4. How did you become friends with this person?
In shimmeringjemmy‘s case, despite foisting a bad apartment on her and other friends when I moved out, we found we had many common interests and world views thru LJ and it grew from there. With w3woody it grew over long, hard hours supporting the local group and working in proximity with him.

5. Is there a friend from your past that you wish you were still in contact with? Why?
A friend? The list could go on and on
Ken J. My best friend and oft-doppleganger from High School (1 of 2)
Carleen Knew me in college at my most awkward, so the worst and best of me… Our recent conversation via email didn’t really do much to get back in touch
Cindee My closest friend in college. And always too hip for Ohio
Badger-not-not-that-Badger Knew him in the SCA. Then he became a lawyer. We used to be twin brothers with matching birthmarks (a right arm) we were seperated at birth, we share the same father but never knew who the mothers were.
Sybel, Elizabeth, and Sean, and Paul the Simple My Pennsic Family
Holly and Kristie Two women I care about deeply as friends and beyond friends. Our last meetings were really bumpy and not our finest hours. I hope you are both doing well.
Marie (T)With Ken J and I , it was like the Scooby Gang with no Buffy. We were three time lords in search of a Tardis.
Missy “Twitch” Truly a dysfunctional H.S. relationship, but she was always cool and different to me.
Derek “Zaphod” There’s nothing I can really say here. 🙂
On reflection of Patrick… And Kristie…. I’d actually love to know how the whole Wyndcroft group is doing. And even the guys from Sunday School. Okay… well all of them except Michael S. He was the bully and I never liked him.

So many people have come and gone. I know I’ve never been much for letter writing. It’s why I like IM so much. I guess I just want to talk to these people like they are still around. Flashes of the past…. Flashes of what made me what I am today… Despite all the mistakes along the way. Because of all the successes.

Well, Thursday I had a phone interview with the tech lead at the company in Alameda, CA. Friday, I had a followup call from the HR department. Both calls went incredibly well.

Sadly, for those who don’t know the geography, Alameda is roughly 357 miles North West and this equates out to a 7 hr drive for Mass in Glendale. So, if this turns out to be my only offer, I will be joining a slew of colleagues who live in the Bay Area. (Waves to bk2w, desdemona612, jd5p, kimberly_a, namshubwriter, nixiekitten, prettyoctopussy, and anyone else I’ve missed) At least I know people up there.

I’m still shooting for an offer from my old company.

In other news, Heather has just gotten her EGC baptism and is currently unconscious in bed. She will no doubt report on this soon 🙂

I am going to begin my concerted effort to get caught up in LJ. I am going to go thru my list one by one (in my personal choice order) and read back for the past month for each person and community. This means you may get an odd response to something you posted about weeks ago. Or not.

This weekend I have two masses. One I am attending and one I am Deaconing for.

Oh yes, I guess I should make the public admission. I have been all approved and given the go-ahead. September 7th I will be performing the role of the Priest for Mass and afterwards I will be officially Ordained as a Priest in the EGC Clergy.

Yay, spirituality. Yay, Magick.

So where is my killer job offer from Apple?

Life has been busy. I guess one could call it a good way. I have been spending quality (pseudo-vacation) time with Heather. When Heather moved down our office was in crunch mode. That means they were working us 10-12 hr days, 6-7 days per week so that we could make sure that we got our product out as promised by management.

In the past two weeks I have taken Heather to Venice Beach, Universal Studios, Disney, and a few other nice sites. We have done genealogy together, played some games, and watched a good bit of Buffy. (She is almost thru season 2, no spoilers folks)

I’ve been putting out applications and resumes just about every day. And in the numbers of 5-10 each time. (Three cheers for the electronic age… rah :-/ )

Sadly however, the software industry is now all about Networking; and I don’t mean Cisco or Novell. It used to be that a resume got a 30 second glance… Then it was 10 seconds electronically to match keywords. Now… Now, your resume seemingly only gets looked at if someone on the hiring team knows you. And only in preparation for your interview.

Which is funny in a way, because one of the things that’s kept me from going whole hog into the Theatre/Film industry is a grand distaste of who you know in place of what you know.

The good news is, that I have a phone interview today. And it’s one I garnered by hand passing a resume at the conference in San Francisco. So it wasn’t a $2K wash. I am familiar with the company, as many readers may reallize that (when I choose to announce it, that) they do to.

The purpose of the software engineering interview is two fold. 1) To do a bulls&*$ check on the resume. “So, I see you say you have 8 years of practical Java experience… Why haven’t you mentioned Sun as a previous employer?” But primarily, it’s a mutual desperation meter. The nature of the questions and the tone can tell one party or the other, who is more desparate for employment.

My interview for TG in ’99 was effectively their CTO going on and on about their technology. in fact, he didn’t really ask me anything other than, “Does this sound interesting to you?”

So, back to today’s phone interview. The potential job is in Alameda. That’s right, near Oakland (Raiders!) where all the nuclear wessels are. (5 geek points each for recognizing the reference)

What I hate to admit folks. And for those who know me really well. I’d almost rather take a Windows development job in L.A. than a Mac Job in the North East bay area. Don’t get me wrong. For the right offer, I’m willing to move. I mean, a six figure salary with the (until recently 6 coloured) fruit in Cupertino (a long goal) would be very hard to pass up. But, I really have grown to love this hazy, smoggy city. We have a beautful church, a nice place to live (which admittedly, they are jacking the rent 10% in September), but most importantly, some very good friends that will be hard to leave behind. Not to say, leaving Pittsburgh was an easy decision either… but that was at the end of 15 years with an eye on California.

So, right now, my two ideal companies have been fairly quiet. Both companies are high in the “Who You Know” department. Fortunately, I have an insider at one of them. This would be a return to my last company doing Java/Windows dev. The other… well, at least I’ve met a colleague who I can commiserate with who is also fighting the, “anyone inside wanna be my friend” battle. Happily, we’re not aimed at the same department; so we might be able to help each other out.

All in all; this one is a cynical day. I stil have the stop watch going… but financially, I don’t _have_ to rush. I don’t want to rush… I want a good job I enjoy.

More posting to come…

LJ+Blog = Fundraiser

93 all.

So there is a web site called “Blogathon” Basically, you blog for 24 hrs. (I believe at least twice an hour) and raise sponsors for a charity / non-profit. This will occur on Saturday, July 26th beginning at 6 am Pacific.

I decided to participate in this year’s Blogathon and request my sponsors send it to my church.

There is more info on the Blogathon available at their main website. You will need to sign up on the site to register as a sponsor, but I am given the idea that the only mail you will receive will be at the end of the event to request you send your donation.

The target blog that I will be aiming at will be my own (lordandrei)

Once registered you can sponsor me at the Pledge Page

You can choose to make your pledge completely anonymous (visible only to the administrators), visible only to me (and the administrators), or visible to everyone.

Extra wrinkle: Saturday, July 26th is our local performance of The Rite of Eleusis; The Rite of Sol. We will be performing the Musical, “Jesus Christ, Super Sol” of which I am playing Judas (Leo). I am not sure how the logistics will work out with that… But it will be amusing (or there will be a team blogger to take over for the 2 hrs during the performance.
