Posted this as a comment in another journal. Decided to post it here.
This was the only time I was threatened with a detention in high school. The Study hall proctor was my calc teacher (a waaaay cool guy)
Someone asked him a remedial math problem (reducing fractions). I offered to help…
I explained that when given a problem like:
16
64
All you really need to do is cross of the 6s
16
64
And it reduces to 1/4
The teacher looked up at me and said, “You know, I could put you away in detention for the rest of the school year for that…”
He then flashed a wicked grin and I explained to the student that this was not how math usually worked.
If you didn’t get this… *grin* Oh well š

You’re so wrong. I love it.
what a “new” idea ;~>
I got into trouble with my 11th grade math teacher for doing Trachtenberg work — all documented, just not the method he was hoping for…
So the gag is that it really DOES reduce to 1/4, but the math you used to get there is bogus?
That’s what it looks like to me. It also looks like Andrei was a meanie in school. š
Correct. Consider, for example, the fraction 15/52: That most certainly does NOT simplify to ½
Ooooo… you were such a rebel.
