I have been sick since Sunday, November 26th. This would officially make it 5 days now. Yesterday I discovered that the problem is that none of the medications I’ve been buying have had pseudophedrine hydrochloride in them.
For those that have missed the news…
This med has been used to make methamphetamine and methcathinone. Thus the appearance of your friendly neighborhood meth labs. Thus to further protect the industires of alcohol, tobacco, and firearms to create products that can kill you; the Guilty until proven innocent government has extended the Patriot Act by turning the purchase of pseudophedrine into a suspect act.
Why yes, I can use strong, partisan-like language. I’m sick and had to present papers for cold medicine
Yes, to purchase medication I had to present government papers for inspection (my DL) and sign a form in a book where my purchase was logged along with my ID information. the form acknowledged tat I understood what the federal penalties were for exceeding the purchase limits of my medications.
I only pray that someone doesn’t discover a way to make orange juice, milk, or water into a street drug. I have had it pointed out to me that it’s easy to make nitroglycerin… but people on the street aren’t really trying to score a good explosion.
Just a little sick-inducd bile to assure that I will never be elected to fix this stuff.
Next time you’re sick, cough on your Congressman, cop, or other civil servant!
This seriously drives me nuts. I can understand making somebody fill out a form if they buy an entire crate of pseudoephedrine but there are plenty of other precursors to meth such as phenylalanine. To the best of my knowledge you can buy phenylalanine supplements at health stores with no hassle.
Why is it that I can buy enough Ammonium nitrate to blow up a building with no problem, but I cannot buy a carton of sudafed without a retinal scan and a full cavity search?
Huh – I have to get the case unlocked to buy cold meds, which sucks, but no one has asked for ID yet. And as the store clerk pointed out to me as he was unlocking the case – drug cookers weren’t BUYING the stuff, they were grabing and dashing. Hence the lockup. A list of people who buy it does exactly nothing.
What does bug me is that my favorite antihistamine, and the only one that worked well for me, has been taken off the market because of all this. That was really upsetting.
Once or twice I’ve had to have the case unlocked or get it from behind a counter instead of on the shelf. I’ve also seen posted limits for how much you can purchase, but I’ve never been carded for it. Then again, I’ve always been really obviously sick when I bought it, or buying other “sickie” items like OJ, cough drops & tissue at the same time.
As far as I know, it’s not a law that makes stores act that way (since it’s not uniform.) It’s a liability/theft prevention issue that each store handles differently. Maybe you should shop at a new store.
I feel your pain. My father and I both have the same allergies, and the only chem. that works on them is the dreaded and scarce pseudoephedrine HCI. I hope you were able to get enough to heal up.

I’ve never taken cold medicine of any kind that reduced the length of time that I was sick — well I mean except water and vitamins. Sudafed and the like have only ever reduced the symptoms while I was sick. Actually in my experience this prolongs the period of time that I exhibit symptoms, because many symptoms (fever, congestion, etc) are happening because my body is trying to cure itself. Anyway try emergen-c and at least 2L of water every day.

Heh… yet!
I used to think that too – that suppressing the symptoms would make the body’s job of curing itself harder. Unfortunately when I was growing up I was never given anything out of the ordinary (e.g. asprin or whatever) when I had a cold or was sick, and for some reason it seemed like it took me an extraordinary amount of time to get over anything… and then even after, say, a cold had passed my sinuses would seem to run for like a month afterward.
Then a few years ago I discovered the magic of ibuprofin. Since then I have come to believe that it is a good thing for me to take a little of it when I am sick, because it actually calms my nervous system to the point where I am (for example) not tearing my throat apart coughing trying to get rid of my stupid sickness. I actually did this when I was a kid, I would sometimes cough as hard as I could or more then I needed to, or blow my nose like crazy – because it hurt or bothered my immensely and i was trying to get rid of the pain or discomfort – and thus would generally waste my strength trying to fight whatever I had in the wrong ways and this would of course make things worse.
due to my previous involvement in stage magic [and thus pyrotechnics], I once had a person ask me if I knew of a chemical company from which to get hydroiodic acid. I had never heard of the stuff. They told me it’s the way to avoid the cat-piss smell of producing it from scratch. Out of amusement, I decided to check what ID you need to get some — a lot. I told them I had found six sources for the stuff (true) but they basically needed a Presidential Bull, a writ from your mother, a note from God, and an old chewing gum wrapper from the Queen. The person never bothered me much after that.
The whole sudafed thing sucks ass. I can understand locking it up since I hear most meth cooks will swipe the stuff instead of paying for it, but making you show papers and sign affidavits is little more than police state profiling in action. Garbage, I say!
I think from now on, in our nice police state, every time I schedule an air flight, I will order a different type of special meal, rotate through the low salt, kosher, halal, vegan, Hindu omnivore, lacto-ovo, low cholesterol, etc. etc. Let them profile me. I was in MI – they already have a nice thick file on me.
Next thing you know, they’ll be profiling who buys whole milk, 2%, 1%, or skim, and who buys OJ with regular pulp, lots of pulp, pulp free, or calcium. Rubbish!

How about if they profile people who are regular versus those who are constipated, and those who get enough sleep versus those who don’t, those who work hard versus those who are lazy… Maybe they should profile who spends their money wisely, always buying stuff when its on sale and always avoiding the overpriced items and stuff that isn’t good for you… oh, and also the people who don’t go over their head in debt, or get tricked by realtors or mortage lending companies, or whatever group of people are on the news lately…
