“House of the Rising Sun” – I love it so much I’ve attempted a few times to rewrite the lyrics into something more palatable.
As you mentioned, “Son of a Preacher Man” and most things by Janis Joplin.
This isn’t quite what you mentioned, but “Fill it Up Again” by the Indigo Girls sounds so much like a roadtrip adventure song, but when you read the lyrics it’s not about that at all – it in fact becomes rather creepy. So I just pretend it’s actually a roadtrip song and make up words. Safer that way.
There is a song that the Corrs do by the Cheiftans called, I Know My Love, which is upbeat and bouncy, and yet its about a woman lamenting the fact that her man is a cheat. Love the music and love the SOUND of the song, as long as I don’t try too hard to think about the lyrics.
OPP by Naughty By Nature. (I figured y’all needed some hip-hop in the mix here). I ADORE that song, but I would never mess around on someone without telling. =)
Carrie Underwood, _Before He Cheats_. Totally, *totally* hate the ‘property destruction as a proper response to adultery’ message. But the girl’s got a set o’ pipes on her, and sounds more like Big Mama Thronton than any white girl should do…
Gotta love automated transcriptions
son of a creature man
I’m hearing some interesting filk running through my head. 🙂
Re: Gotta love automated transcriptions
seconded. hilarious.
yup! – that old jazz –
Aretha Franklin – don’t remember the song – but “she knows that a woman’s duty is to help and love her man”
and Ray Charles – I gotta woman – “shes knows a womans place,
it’s right there now in her home”
“House of the Rising Sun” – I love it so much I’ve attempted a few times to rewrite the lyrics into something more palatable.

this in turn is very similar to…
the Police’s Every Breath You Take.
Gads in highschool it was everyone’s love song.
You just sat there going, “MORONS! It’s about a crazed stalker!”
Re: this in turn is very similar to…
Apparently, Sting is highly disturbed at how popular that song is as a ‘first dance’ song at weddings.

I really loved that song in high school. A few years back I thought about it and realized, hey… since then I’ve started calling it “The Stalker Song”.

Of course, there are always other perspectives.

“Spirit in the Sky.” I have no beliefs in Jesus or Christianity, yet I love that song. The guitar licks speak to me.
