And yet, I seem to see a pattern emerging here.
It’s ironic that I can fully comprehend when I went through areas of the country. It’s also amusing that the large hole in the middle represents several of the states that I just plain don’t believe in.
I refuse to believe in Kansas, Iowa, South Dakota, and Vermont.

I think the term you are looking for is “fly-over country”–as in this is the chunk of the country that the Intellectual Elite in our country simply “fly over”, and never visit–unless they’re a presidental candidate seeking election.
