I’m going to keep this one short:
I’m intending to run for the LiveJournal Advisory Board. Nominations open May 5th (Monday)
I’d like your support. If you’d like to support me; here’s what you can do.
1) Post in your journal that I’m going to run and request your readers do the same. (Link back here)
2) Read:
— the post about what this actually means
— My original statement of intent
3) On May 5th, I will post the link to my nomination; I need at lest 100 different user comments that say, “I support this nomination”
4) Question me, question the process: If you have any questions, concerns, advise, etc… Please feel free to comment here.
I think I am qualfied, motivated, and passionate enough to have a positive effect on LiveJournal and be a fair representative of the different types of users that LJ has.
Thanks
By the way: If anyone would like to help me with graphics or badges for this endeavor…. I would be very appreciative.

Thanks muchly for the support. Hopefully we can get more people posting from posters friend’s lists.

Questions Questions Questions
LJ is currently dealing with a number of issues, amongst them balancing the need for lj to be a safe place for children and for it to remain legal and not get their equipment seized with being an open community where people can express what they will.
a while back they ended up shutting down many communities to try and fulfill this goal.
If you’re going to be on the board and representing users in situations like this, what mindset and opinion do you bring to the board about this type of delicate balance, and options for dealing with it in a constructive way, preserving everyones rights and safety as best as is possible?
Thanks.
— James
Re: Questions Questions Questions
Thank you James for this question. I will try to get you an answer during my lunch break at work.
Re: Questions Questions Questions
James, thank you for a question that is very important to me.
I am both a supporter of free speech and a father to a toddler. So the concerns about what my son will be exposed to are as important to me as giving each person the right to speak as they will.
I am not keen on legislating any action between consenting adults. That being said, we also need to be aware that LiveJournal is an international system that can be affected by many different local laws. Some of these laws run counter to our own beliefs. However, due to their jurisdiction, they don’t affect us directly; only through services that we share with that jurisdiction.
I think that LiveJournal needs to do everything within its power to make dependable age restrictive technologies available to parents. I think the filtering mechanisms that exist are a step in the right direction. They put the power in the hands of the poster and the community that views the post, and does its best to take it out of the hands of people who would abuse the system.
I have given suggestions to LiveJournal in the past that deal with extending the filter mechanism to be more useful. The current system allows me to filter readers of a post by a group I create. The system I propose allows the user to also create filters based on the content of other users’ posts.
Example: show me my friends list showing all friends, minus any posts using blacklisted words.
There are more difficult topics beyond ‘adult material’, where we really need to explore the potential repercussions to the company. For example: posting a call for people to participate in a crime. While I don’t support censorship, here the medium potentially becomes an accessory to the crime.
Whatever method is used should be designed and implemented in an informed manner. The arbitrary removal of offenders with no warning only leads to the issues we’ve seen in the past.
This is only a rough explanation of where I stand on the issue. If you have a more specific example you’d like to raise (and where ethics come in… there is always room to come up with the kobyashi maru problem) I am more than happy to continue the thread.
Thank you again.
